Johnny & The Old Oak Tree - The old oak tree explains why we need to

recycle encouraging Johnny to think of ideas to help reduce, reuse and recycle.

The tree helps Johnny to image a landfill teaching him about where our trash

is carried and how it is taking over our open green spaces on this earth.

Sir Johnny's Recycling Adventure -The tree returns to teach Johnny about

the important arrows that are symbols for products that are made from recycled paper

Johnny then imagines being at the factory and recycled from the steps of pulp to paper.

How did the idea for the books begin? ( share this with students before author visit)

The idea for the Hands on The World Book Series came

when Rachael Paulson's daughter Danielle then 2 1/2 asked her about recycling.

She wanted to know what  the word meant and why people recycled.

Paulson made use of her years of teaching experience, sitting down to pen

a tale that would include some of her own personal experiences.

The main character Johnny was created as a  memorial

to the authors young brother who died at the age of seven.

The tree house idea was included because her husband Mike

was building a playhouse in the backyard for her own children.

Her children Danielle and Michael posed for the water color illustrations

and author Delton Gerdes of Texas used their photos to create the

beautiful paintings.

Thereafter some amazing events happened leading to the manuscript

being sponsored and published by an international paper company

with Rachael Paulson managing each step of the book production.

Two books were given birth by this concept and they are being used by parents

and teachers informing children about the methods and process of paper recycling.

The series also allows children to understand why they need to reduce, reuse and

recycle empowering them to make a difference in the world.

The books are being used around the world, translated into different languages

and the manuscipt has been used for children's stage shows and plays.

Rachael Paulson travels the globe to speak to children about caring for the

earth's land motivating children to take action with plantings, clean ups  and

recycling programs in their own communities.
