South Africa - KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)

Green community Hubs in Progress- 2006-2011

We are now working in 8 villages in Kwa Zulu Natal South Africa. We try to group our hubs in clusters so that they may work as a team to support each other during this process of proposing water. Many of our schools and clinics are in the Sisonke district but we are moving outside the district so that we may try to reach out to the 700 school villages in need. Each of our locations has been chosen because they have shown true leadership skills. We spend time at each property to see if we can motivate a true partnership. We are so pleased and proud of the properties and leaders that we have chosen. Meet our chosen properties below!

Marithal Combined Mission School sisonke district ( In progress until Oct.2010

Umgeni Water, our friends and partners have funded the large job of

putting water into this village school of 1000 students. This school will have running water by November of 2010 and all sinks will be in working order.

A food garden will be started by the students and teachers.

A launch will take place and students will take part in our Earth Mural

projects and put on a showcase of environmental topics during our launch.

All ministers and local leaders will be there as we hand this project over to the

town and leaders.

Umgodi Primary School in Highflats sisonke district ( completed project)

This school now has running water!!!!!!!!!!!! We had a UK school  help with funding

along with so many small donations from schools in the USA. A partnership

with the Foundation of Post Conflict Development helped us start this project.

What we need for 2011:

  • To fund the electric for this school.
  • To put in another borehole and to put in electric pump.

Jongimpilo Community Clinic in Creighton sisonke district ( Completed Project)

We are so proud to say that many of you came on as partners to assist

us with putting running water into this HIV clinic. They now have sinks,

a flushing toliet and also a bath tub.  In this rural area that sits on

the top of a hill where it is so hard to travel, we are so grateful to

now have a place where we can bring helpers to lodge here.

You have changed the lives of those walking miles to this clinic

where they use this home based hospital as their safe have

as they now can be treated in sanitary conditions.

Thank you to Andrew of African Insight for helping us complete

this hub project.

Needs for HIV Clinic are as follows: 2010-2011

  • Ongoing health care supplies

  • medical doctors and nurses to donate time

  • Garden supplies and workshop leadership for planting.

The Sokhela Primary School in Donnybrook sisonke district  ( NEXT IN LINE FOR WATER)

The 250 children at this school along with the surrounding hut like communities with no water or electric are walking to the river to fetch water. We will be working with Umgeni Water Company and the local municipalities to install water along with our other stages for a 2011 project date set in mind. Site visit is set for November of 2008 and also January 2010. The school principal has been a part of our ongoing task force since 2007.

Carisbrooke Primary School sisonke district this school was our very first hub and we installed water in 2006. The school keeps making progress and we work to upgrade the food garden and school property so that it is healthy and safe. This school is also used as a meeting place for the task force meetings with Dan Shoba principal acting as a leader to other schools in need in the district of Sisonke. This school is no longer in a state of emergency however, with so many orphans in the village surrounding the school the outreach that we bring is so important. This school is  now prepared to take on interns who wish to donate time to working at the school with the children on learning English, lessons on environment, sanitation and we welcome those who wish to create and practice eco-science workshops at this primary grade school. This year, students will start to test water with kits. Also we shall supply tools for the garden which has tripled in size. Rest rooms sinks will be added at the school. All walls of school will be painted as this school acts as our showcase model to visitors worldwide.

Isulubasha Primary School (Completed Project Report)

This school is located in the district of UGU. It has had water installed for both the school and community. A garden is now in place. Composting has begun. We also have installed a sink. Both the school and the community have access to the electric pump that has been installed. Students have taken part in all related activities of art and music. Also the school has acted as a base for meetings of leadership. We will continue to support small projects at this hub and it is now ready for interns and visitors to practice here. The school sits next to a reserve that has lodging and is a great place to set up internship visits.

Sithembakuye Children's Home and Community Outreach ( 2011 project)

Founder Russell lost both of his parents to HIV. Feeling lost and alone as a child, he was inspired to help other children who are facing the same loss. He has provided a home to 12 children. He also has community meetings and provides a place where grandmothers can meet. It is these strong women that are the caretakers of the millions of orphans that are in developing countries. The grandmother meetings allow these women to know that if they pass away, someone will be there to take in their children.

We hope to assist other non profits who are local to the area in putting in a borehole to

help the many grandmothers who meet weekly to disuss problems and solutions.

We also hope to bring workshops to this hub that can help children

to deal with grief and suffering that is connected to their loss and poverty.

Lufafa Primary School   sisonke district  ( 2011 project)

This school is the newest to be placed on our list as a model. It is close to the Mariathal Combined School in location. This primary school is very hard to reach as you wrap around a steep mountain to reach the top of a hill where a small building sits. Out of 300 children, 54 are orphaned. They must walk to fetch water from the local pond. We are seeking a sponsor for this school that is in need of Life Straws. From there, funds will be raised for a borehole and pump.
